Genre: Fantasy/Cards

Released: 2004

I entered the theater not expecting much. I must say, I was VERY pleasantly surprised. The movie, while still no where near the calibur of the original manga series, is still much better than the crappy television series. 4Kids did a great job with this one, seeing as this is a completely from scratch movie by them. Thats right. There is no original japanese movie of this film.

4Kids showed the television series original creators how well they were doing with it's american dub, (even though I think it sucks), and convinced them to allow a completely new, 4Kids directed movie. (Of course, the animation is done by the same crew as the series, but the script and everything else is original.) Now knowing that, you'd expect it to be even worse than you may have imagined, but as I said before, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Plot
6/10

The movie starts off soon after the Battle City Finals. The narrator talks about the ancient shadow games, and how they were eventually locked away for eternity, e.t.c. He then says, (I found this funny even though it probably wasn't meant to be) "But, even eternity doesn't last forever." It shows scenes of when Yugi first solved the millenium puzzle, and when archaologists first found the tomb of Anubis, The Egyptian God Of Death. Cut to the very present, where big public TV's everywhere are taking about Yugi's massive success as a duelist. Everyone, (Kaiba obviously included) seems to be jealous of him, and wants to beat him. Kaiba goes to Pegasus to obtain a card that will defeat Yugis god cards. He does. He duels Yugi. Anubis comes back to life. They fight him. Basically, its a pretty cliche plot. But it works.

Animation
8/10

About as good as the show. Very thick, dark borders around characters and objects. Some cool special effects during the movie.

Voice Acting
9/10

Very impressive. The voice actors seem much more sure of their characters than on the show. I especially liked Kaiba. For once he wasn't doing "Mr. Sinister" all the time.

Overall
7.5/10

Worth seeing if you like Yu-Gi-Oh, or just anime in general. Plus, you get a cool promotional card at the theater.
