In the far future, two planets are at war. One planet, Tarrak, is composed completely of men and the other planet, Mejaaru, is composed completely of women. Hibiki Tokai is a third class citizen (the lowest class of citizen possible) who works on an assembly line making Vanguards. Vanguards are new, human shaped space mecha, which are to act as fighters on the new fleet ship, the Ikazuchi and its unique power source, the Pexis.

He, however, is sick of his terrible lot in life and decides to steal one of the Vanguards he has worked so hard on. Hibiki sneaks onto the Ikazuchi and finds the Vandread hangar, and that?s when his plan goes terribly wrong. Unexpectedly, the time table of launch for the Ikazuchi is stepped up and it takes off with him inside. If this wasn't bad enough, they are soon attacked by Mejaaran pirates and the men are driven off of their own ship as the women's ship docks with it. Not wanting to lose their new ship, the men decide to destroy it rather than let the women have it. However, as the men's torpedo explodes, the Pexis shoots the two ships, the Ikazuchi and the pirates' ship into a deep part of space. As a result of this, the two ships become fused and one Vanguard as well as three of the pirates ships, or Dreads, change in ways the pilots can not even imagine. Now, the female pirates and their three male captives have to work together to get back to their homes in the face of a new, stronger enemy than they have ever met before. The question is, can they get past their differences and three generations of animosity for eachother?

This anime has elements from many different animes, but blends them together in a way that is completely unique. One of the best parts of the series is the computer generated space battles. Some other animes have used this method before, but this one uses it the best and combines the animation with the CGI flawlessly. Think of this anime as part Gundam and part Love Hina, but just as good as either of them.
