500 years ago, in Japan, a civil war was taking place. Although the rebels were greatly outnumbered, they had among their number a young hitokiri, an assassin who killed all of his targets without fail. Although he was just a young teenager, his disposition was one of a person who had killed for years.
Fans of the Rurouni Kenshin anime series have been clamoring to know Kenshin's backstory. This is a 4 part OVA is the response to that need. The story of this hitokiro, Kenshin, chronicles his youth or his origin story. It goes through his meeting and subsequent training with his master Hiko Seijuro who passed down the famous Hiten Mitsurugi Style to Kenshin. Then it goes into the actual war, his first love, and how he got the cross shaped scar.
This is a beautifully drawn OVA in every sense of the word. The colors and way everything moves is as good as any OVA out there. The voice actors are excellent as well. The story is very emotional and the characters are very real. The only real negative is that some people say that it gets too slow during the third part of the OVA. That should not stop you from getting this OVA anywhere you find it. If you are a fan of Rurouni Kenshin or if you read the manga and are about to start the Jinchuu arc, you need to see this OVA. It is one of the best pieces of anime to date.
