Hikaru Shindou was an everyday 6th grade school kid. One day, while scrounging for junk to sell in his grandfather's attic with his friend, Akari, Hikaru finds an old Go board with blood stains on it. Strangely, he is the only one that can see the blood stains. What is stranger is that, after trying to rub off the blood stains, a ghost appeared out of the Go board. The ghost he set loose turns out to be the best Go player of all time, Fujiwara no Sai. Sai's ghost set up residence in the Go board because of his desire to play the "kami no itte" or God's hand, which has never been accomplished.
Soon, Hikaru and Sai become good friends as Sai tries to teach young Hikaru how to play Go and Hikaru tries to keep Sai's amazing ability a secret to the Go world. This story chronicles Hikaru's climb through the Go ranks as he aspires to reach the level of his true rival, Touya Akira. As well as Sai's balancing act of his love for playing the game against his ambition to see Hikaru get better as well.
This anime is one of the few where the characters grow throughout the series. Not just in a physical aspect, but their characters and their interrelations grow as well. The artwork is superbly done and the music is pretty good as well. The only drawback that some would have with this series is that it is about a board game that can be pretty boring if you don't know how the game is played. Luckily, there are short mini-lessons at the end of each episode to help explain the game to beginners. The characters are the real strong point of this series. They come to life through their interactions with each other and how they deal with setbacks and achievements in the world of Go.
