"Fight fire with fire" is how the phrase goes, or how Metallica's song goes too.

The whole day my computer's just been hanging all the time, first it hung within 20 minutes and now, it hangs every 5 or 10 mins. I thought maybe it was something I'd done wrong, installed a program or two that was faulty. I'ad installed GetRight yesterday and un-installed it today, but that's about it. I run on an XP machine and this is like a chronic disease all of a sudden.

How can I make my girlfriend's cold go away ?

have you tried running ad-aware or spybot to see if its a spyware issue? you might be able to get them to run fast enough after a boot up.

sounds like a serious pileup of spyware, also look whats all running on your system tray, if its a million trinket programs running here and there, try closing all of them that you arent using.

Good suggestions ^_^ ... I'll get myself the program Sledge and Dx, is there a way I can remove programs that run on the start-up. I've seen those computer chaps do it when they come over but I never payed any attention to it. You think that'd help better ? Remove the programs to run when my pc starts ?

boot to safemode and run adaware, spybot search and destroy, Any viruse scanners you have. By booting to safemode you stop most programs from starting up. Also when using Spybot have it also scan again on the next computer bootup. This will happen next time you restart your computer the first thing thats loaded is spybot, it will then scan your PC again for ad junk, trojans and hijack crap and remove it all or most of it. Once thats done try hitting ctrl+alt+del and see if theres still weird things running that you never saw before (ex. sftwfsasdw.exe). If there is then simply try and kill the proccess, if it starts up another program then go to start>run> and type in msconfig and hit enter. The click the bootup tab and uncheck all the weird programs that are starting up when windows is booting up (please keep in mind if your gonna do this make shore your not stoping legit programs that need to be started. This could cause errors if not used right). After your done click apply or done and it will promp you to restart your computer, so do as it wants and reboot. Run all your spybot and ad programs again to double check if theres any more crap still there, if theres not and your computer is faster then you should probly go on google and search up all the things you stoped from booting up and see what they are. If there ad programs then simple find them on your computer and delete them all by hand if adaware or spybot didnt get them. Once your done with that then you should be set to go again.

Keep in mind if you dont wanna fool with msconfig then Id disconnect your computer from the internet and connect another and search up all weird exe's on google and delete the known ones that are infact ad programs or trojans. The reason you should disconnect is simple becuse each time you make a conneciton to the web the programs might start downloading all the things spybot deleted.

So a fast recap of what you should do:
1) get a copy of adaware, Spybot - Search & Destroy and a viruse scanner handy.
2)Disconnect your internet if you have cable/dsl after you get these programs installed and updated
3) Boot to safemode and run a scan using all the programs listed above.
4) Set Spybot - Search & Destroy to boot when you restart your computer (it should be in options or somthing)
5) restart computer and let spybot scan your system
6) Look in your ctrl+alt+del and see if theres still weird processes
7) look them up on google on a diffrent computer and see if the processes are ad programs or trojans and delete them all if they are in fact ad programs.
8) Then run spybot, Adaware, viruse scanners one last time if theres nothing on your computer then plug back in the internet and see if it made a diffrence.

PS. sorry for spelling.

I've got AVG's latest version installed and run through virus checks on that quite frequently since I don't trust my brother and the websites he visits X'D -_-

But, yeah that's a good set of things to checck on and perform, I'll only have to be UBER careful. Plus I'm not sure how to get my XP on safe mode ? Does it even exist on XP hahah ... never seen my comp startup on it, so far.

On bootup press F8 a few times till your computer beeps or you see that it boots to safe mode. You have to do this fast or else it wont boot to safemode and you will have to restart your computer all over again.

Ya winXP's Safemode is somewhat diffrent from win98 and under. It will never boot to safemode unless you want it too by pressing F8. This was diffrent for win95, win98 and maby win2k it would boot to safemode if there was a issue loading the desktop or a network device.

Hows it going? Did it all work out yet?

What OS are you using (ex. Win98,WinXP, Linux...)? If it's a Windows OS then Id recommend you do that same things that I suggested to Godgrave. Ad, spyware and trojans basicly take over your computer and slow it down to a crawl or cause your computer to freeze at times if it's a semi out of date system. If you do the following and your computer still freezes then It might be hardware related. For example bad memory or your on board chipset died.

Some questions you might wanna ask your self would be, when did this problem start, what did I download before this started happening, what sites did I visit before this started, how long have I had my pc, is it time for a new pc. Feel free to post more info about your system and Ill try and help more.

It might be hardware. Im not a Mac user but im guessing if your computer freezes often it might just be hardware related. Im sorry, like I said im not a Mac user so I cant really help you with that.

It's okay. I found out what was wrong. I had a bunch of crap stored on my computer that I didn't need. It was a memory issue, so I erased the crap that I didn't need. It's running fine now. Thanks for the effort anyway.

Thanks! It took a really long time to delete all the crap of though. I got about 2 gigs of memory by deleting all of the uneeded trash. So yes, Macs are VERY evil. lol

OK, so far so good, nothing's hung on me *crosses his fingers* ^_^

First I ran the safe mode and did a Scan Disk because I figured it's faster in this mode than in normal. I already have a bad sector or two (my new HD is less than 5 months old), but that let aside, I restarted and ran AVG for any viruses and the works. Quaranteed 2 files and then checked my drives whether I had useless information or not. That GetRight folder was gone from where I put it, but a sub share folder still remained. Manually deleted it and restarted. That's about it and it's working fine so far ^_^. Merci guys .... I don't know how long this dream run will last with my girl, but our anniversary's coming up and she's not hanging on me .... yet !

Ya forgot to say run scan disk and disk clean up, but ya thats normal to see bad sectors if you do alot of downloading or if you had a few bad viruses. As for the AVG quaranteen thats good to hear. They where probly trojans correct? If they where then thats probly why your computer was going so slow. Now a days the malware/trojans are made to just download as much crap and slow down your computer as much as possible without even letting you know. If they where viruses then they where probly just eating up your CPU :p and pissing you off.

Anyway good hear the news. Id suggest running adaware and spybot every few weeks or so also run AVG as often as you can. These days you can even go to a safe site without getting attacked by random ads and crap.

Trojans maybe, also looked like corrupt system files. I'm gonna periodically do the scans for sure ^_^

Try a bunch of different spy and adware programs. I've yet to find one that recognizes all problems. Good luck....and give that girl plenty of liquids.
